Congratulations on a good grading!

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the grading last night!

Even though not everyone was graded up, it gave the Senseis a good opportunity to see where everyone is at with their techniques and kata. It also gives us an opportunity to evaluate ourselves and determine if we worked our hardest through the whole grading and can take the suggestions of the senseis and make improvements for the next grading.

Sensei Kevin has always said, “Don’t treat a grading as if it were just another class. Treat every class as if it were a grading.”

There WILL be class next Tuesday, February 19. It will not count as a formal class for the sign-in book but if you would like to come and workout there will be a Sensei there to work with you.

February 26 will be the last day to turn in Shirt order forms. We will be taking orders for new Gi Bags as well for those interested.

See you at the dojo.

Grading Next Week! Clinic Information.

Good workout last night, everyone!

The grading will be held next Tuesday, February 12, 2013.

Just For Kicks will be graded during their regular class from 6:30 to 7:30. Be early and warmed up and ready to start at 6:30!

The Jr. and Adult grading will begin at 7:30. Also, be early to warm up and ready to start on time. Remember that this group will have to warm up quietly so as not to interfere with the JFK grading.

Here are the links to the information on the clinics taking place in Hamiota on Saturday, March 2, 2013. This clinic is in conjunction with an “Instructor’s Clinic” for Brown and Black Belts being held over the entire weekend. The clinic participants will basically be “guinea pigs” for the Brown and Black Belt participants to practice their new instruction techniques. But you’ll get a good karate workout in the process. It will also be an opportunity to do some work with our Federation’s Chief Instructor, Sensei Ron Mattie.

If you are interested in participating, please complete the “Clinic Application-1” document and email it to Sensei Scott Lints at slints@mts.net

Here is some accomodation information:

Workout Tomorrow

Tomorrow, February 5, will be the last day to turn in shirt orders. If you wish to order one, please complete an order form and leave a cheque with one of the Senseis.

Also, don’t forget to sign the participation form for the Saskatoon/Warman tournament in April. We’ll be looking at that soon to determine what the club can do for arrangements. It would be great to see lots of participation in that tournament.

Don’t forget to keep preparing for your grading. It’s coming soon!

See you at the dojo.

Another good workout!

Great work on Tuesday night, everyone! Things are looking good for your grading.

Remember to practice the things that we mentioned in class. Especially important are your stances. Keep your knees bent and backs straight for starters. When you’re practicing at home, keep it interesting by creating sequences of moves on your own. Try stringing together techniques that each use a different stance, for example. And don’t forget to practice your kata!

Anyone who is interested in ordering a shirt like we had on display in class must have their order forms handed in by February 5, 2013.

SASKATOON TOURNAMENTApril 5 and 6. If you would like to attend, please sign your name to the sign-up sheet at the next class. The number of people who sign up will determine whether the club will pre-arrange accomodation and possibly transportation.

Just an FYI regarding this event:

1. This is not like a school trip. The club senseis will not be acting as chaperones/guardians for any minor children who attend the tournament.
2. Members under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
3. If the club arranges hotel accomodation, it will be in the manner of a block of rooms being held for us that the members must then phone in to make a reservation.
4. Currently, members will be responsible for their own transportation to and from Saskatoon/Warman.
5. If enough members sign up, charter bus transportation may be considered.

If enough members participate, the club may consider helping to cover some of the costs associated with the tournament. This is only a possibility at this time.

Good to be back at it!

It was nice to see everyone back after an extended winter break! The Melitta Teaching Tournament is taking place as we write this and things are running smoothly.

The South Calgary Wado Kai Karate Tournament is coming up on March 8 and 9, 2013. Below is a link for the informational package and the registration form. This is one of the largest Wado tournaments in Western Canada and the members of our club who have attended have all really enjoyed the event.

Also, we would like our members to consider attending the Saskatoon/Warman Tournament which is being held on April 5 and 6. This is the last weekend of the Easter break so our younger members wishing to attend the workshop AND the tournament wouldn’t have to worry about missing school.

If there are enough members interested in attending this tournament, there is a chance we could arrange transportation for all of us and one of the senseis could look into accomodation arrangements. There will be a SIGN UP sheet at the next workout. More information about the tournament will follow soon. The Saskatoon/Warman Clubs have been strong supporters of our tournament for a number of years and it would be great to see our club return the favor. It is a fairly large tournament in a very nice facility and it gives us a chance to visit beautiful Saskatoon.

And lastly… remember to keep practicing for the upcoming GRADING. Your grading forms are due, along with any outstanding fees, at the workout on Tuesday, January 22.

See you at the dojo.

Last Class before Christmas break

Tomorrow night will be our last workout before the Christmas break. Be sure to come and get a good tune up before taking 2 weeks off!!

Also, just a reminder that we are now into Session 2 of our karate season. If you haven’t yet paid your fees, please do so. Any amounts owing will be noted on your sign in card.

A grading has been scheduled for January 15. Keep working over the break. We have only 1 class after the holiday to do final preparations for the grading. We return to karate on January 8, 2013!

Please consider participating in the “Teaching Tournament” hosted in Melitta, MB on January 19, 2013. It is an excellent, small tournament that is perfect for our younger karateka to get some tournament experience. It is also good for our higher ranking belts to develop some ring experience.

See you at the dojo.

Congratulations Sempai Savanna!

On being awarded the Clinton McFarlane Memorial Trophy. You are well-deserving of the recognition.

Excellent work in class tonight, everyone! Be sure to “walk through” these self-defense techniques often on your own. Like many things, if you don’t keep at it, you eventually lose it.

Next week is the last week of Session 1. Please consider submitting membership fees for Session 2.

PHOTOGRAPHS from the Provincial Karate Tournament have been posted online. You may view them here.

Great Tournament!

Well done and congratulations, everyone, on another successful Provincial Karate Tournament!

It was great to see so many of our students participating in the weekend’s events from the workout on Friday night through the tournament and banquet on Saturday. Hopefully everyone met a new “karate friend” from another club and can look forward to seeing that friend at future tournaments. It is these connections and friendships built between clubs and provinces that strengthen and support our national Federation and keep us growing into the future.

For our visiting clubs… Thank you for coming so far to take part in our tournament! It is always a treat to have you visit us and we hope to return the visit to your clubs.

We’re back to regular classes in our home dojo this week. We look forward to hearing your stories from the tournament. Sensei Jayson has a good one.

See you at the dojo.

Class Tonight…

We’ll be having our regular classes tonight.

Just for Kicks at 6:30 and the Jr’s and Adults at 7:30.

We’re preparing hard for the tournament and we’ll be asking for volunteers tonight to help with various aspects of the tournament weekend.

See you tonight!

Time to Start Preparing…

for our annual tournament.

Each year, we host the SK Provincial Wad0-Kai Karate Tournament and it is always a terrific success. But only because we work together to make it that way!

The tournament draws over 100 people annually from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta and often has guests from Ontario as well. Naturally, to have an event like this run smoothly, we must ask people to take on certain responsibilities. But many hands make light work and if we all pitch in to help out no single job is very difficult.

We have only 2 workouts left to prepare for the tournament so next week we will be asking for volunteers for certain jobs on the tournament weekend. Since we’ll all be there (wink wink), it is easier to help out with some of these jobs.

We’ll need help with score keeping and timing (we’ll teach you how to do it; it’s really easy), canteen (including people to run the BBQ’s if that’s what’s decided), perhaps a prize table like our kids have at hockey tournaments, an equipment/merchandise table, and some other jobs as well. Come to the workout next week with your “Volunteer Hat” on!

This tournament has been running in Carlyle for over 25 years! Let’s make this the best one yet!!

Oh, and don’t forget to practice your kata!
