2 Classes to go before Tournament

We have regular class tomorrow night. Only tomorrow and next week left before our tournament on November 29 and 30.

We are asking our members to bring prizes for the draw table. Just a small item, either a toy or other item for younger members or a gift suitable for an adult, is fine. Please bring your gift to karate class and leave it with Payton Littlechief.

More details will be announced at karate class.

See you at the dojo.

The Duffles Have Arrived!

The last of the duffle bags arrived on Wednesday! We’ll be handing them out in class next Tuesday. They look GOOD!

It was great to see everyone out again! We are officially up to 99 active members for this session! Now… let’s get EVERYONE out to the tournament!

We can’t say enough about how great the tournaments are! Yes, it seems like a scary thing at first but once you’re there and doing it you will really enjoy yourself. Doing your kata in front of 5 judges you don’t know and then doing kumite against an opponent you’ve never seen before can seem like an intimidating experience. However, all of the judges (higher ranking black belts) are there to help make us all better karateka. It is their primary goal to keep us safe and improve our skills. If there is a competitor in kumite who is being overly aggresive, the judges will tell them to back off. When we get a score for our kata we can use it as a bench mark for the next tournament and try to beat OURSELVES at the next event. And one of the most fun aspects of any tournament is meeting other people who share a similar interest to us. We have all been in the position of the rookie tournament participant… not sure where to go; not sure to whom to bow; and trying like crazy to remember even the first move of our chosen kata! We’re telling you now that you have nothing to worry about. Just try to be relaxed and whatever happens… happens.

We’ll be working on tournament prep over the next few weeks in order to get everyone in tournament shape. We REALLY would like to see most, if not all, of us register in the tournament. DON’T WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR! Even if this is your first year just jump in to the deep end and go for it!

We will be adding an ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM this year. When it is ready, we’ll post the link here on the blog.

See you at the dojo!

Regular Class Tonight

We’re back in our regular dojo tonight. Class times are also at the usual times.

Remember to think about ways that you can help out with our tournament. We host the Saskatchewan Provincial event so we always want to make it an exciting and memorable event.

See you at the dojo!

Everyone Made It!

It was good to see that everyone found their way to our alternate location last night! Everyone worked hard and should be feeling it in their legs, hips, and quite likely the side of their ribs!

We’re back to the regular dojo next week and we’ll be starting to turn our attention to some tournament preparation. We’ll be asking for volunteers to handle various aspects of the tournament such as but not limited to: prize table, canteen, clothing etc. Also, if you have any thoughts on a unique tournament activity to do with each age/belt division please let a Sensei know about it and maybe we can work it into the tournament.

See you at the dojo.

Great News!

We are very pleased to announce that Sensei Darren Humphries will be leading the clinic portion of our tournament this year! Our tournament, the Saskatchewan Provincial Wado Kai Karate Tournament will be held on Saturday, November 30, 2013 with the clinic taking place the night before on Friday, November 29, 2013. Both events will take place at G.F. Kells High School in Carlyle.

Sensei Darren is a Godan (5th degree Black Belt) from Calgary, AB. He is originally from Carlyle and his martial arts career has taken him to many parts of the world including some time studying karate in Japan. He is a 3-time member of the Shintani National Team having represented Canada in a number of events. He is an energetic and motivating martial artist who naturally inspires his students to achieve their best. He is also a Black Belt in the art of Hapkido. If you wish to learn more about Sensei Darren and his club you can click here to visit his club web site.

Congratulations!

… to each of our members who attended the Selkirk tournament this weekend!

We had 7 members make the long drive out to Selkirk to participate in the Manitoba Provincial tournament and they all represented our club very well. Good job, everyone! We’ll ask how things went for you at the workout tomorrow.

DON’T FORGET… to tie your belts properly and to line up your shoes neatly along the sides of the entry to the dojo so people aren’t tripping over shoes and stepping in watery mud in the middle of the floor as they enter the dojo.

See you at the dojo.

Duffle Bag Update

So it seems that Under Armour has changed their product line and the bags that we had previously used are no longer in production. Our supplier is meeting with the Under Armour reps to see about any availability of our bags and to look at the product that will be replacing it. Unfortunately, if we have to go with some kind of new product, it will not be available until mid-July. That means waiting until the fall to receive our bags.

We’ll keep you updated as we learn more.

Good luck to those members who are travelling to Selkirk this weekend for the Manitoba Provincial Tournament.

See you at the dojo.

Good Work and Tournament Reminder

Good work tonight, everyone!

Just another reminder about the Manitoba Provincial Wado Kai Karate Tournament being held this weekend in Selkirk, MB.

Good luck to our members who said they would be attending. Remember to leave yourself plenty of time to get there. It “Googles” around 450 KM so it will take about the same amount of time to get there as it does to Saskatoon.

Here is the info and registration forms.

Another Tournament!

The Manitoba Provincial Wado Kai Karate Tournament has a new home and date this year. The new date is APRIL 27, 2013. That’s just around the corner. So anyone into tournament mode will appreciate that!

We don’t get too many other tournaments that are within reasonable driving distance from our club so when they do come up it’s great to try to support them. We’ll have the information and registration forms at the workout on Tuesday.

According to Google Maps, Selkirk is roughly 450 km from Carlyle. About the same distance as travelling to Saskatoon. It is just north and slightly east of Winnipeg. There’s a map at the bottom of this post.

… to everyone who attended the Saskatoon/Warman tournament this weekend!

The tournament was held in the brand new Legends athletic centre in Warman, SK. What a huge and beautiful facility. The tournament was well attended, although we could have used a few more black belts, and our club was well represented in many divisions. We look forward to hearing about your tournament experience at our workout on Tuesday.

If anyone took any photos while at the tournament, please contact Sensei Kevin and we’ll find a way to share them here and on our photo page.

See you at the dojo!
