Regular Workout Tonight!

It’s time to dig in and fine tune our techniques and katas for the tournament at the end of the month!

You can expect some senior members to approach you to help at a certain aspect of the tournament like the canteen, the merchandise table, the gift raffle table, etc.

Each and every member of the club is encouraged to register for the workout on Friday, November 25 and the tournament on Saturday, November 26. They are excellent and educational family events. You will meet many people who are experiencing the same things as you in your study of karate; you will have the opportunity to meet the President of our Shintani Wado-Kai Karate Federation, Sensei Dennis Labbé, 8th Degree Black Belt; you will get to observe many talented black belts compete in the Black Belt Competition; but more importantly, many of the people you will meet will become good friends and “karate tournament buddies”! Although competitive, it is a healthy atmosphere of support and friendship. Everyone wants everyone else to do well!

The Friday night workout is led by high ranking Senseis in our Federation and are always informative and inspirational. The tournament on Saturday is where it all comes together and, win or lose, everyone benefits from being there.

See you in class.

No Karate Next Week!

Just a reminder that regular karate classes have been CANCELLED for TUESDAY, OCTOBER 25. The Elementary school is hosting the Missoula Children’s Theatre and they are using the space for their rehearsals.

However, that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t do any karate next week. Take some of the time that you would normally spend at karate class and go through your techniques and katas. For some of our newer members, try to do the counting in Japanese even just for a few counts that you can remember to help train your mind to the number system.

Always remember that what you get out of something is equal to what you put into it. Work on your karate and it will work for you.

Great workout yesterday!!

Great work last night, everyone!!

Sensei Joan has begun taking equipment orders for items like gi’s, hand pads, mouth guards, gi bags, etc. If you are interested in ordering anything, please speak to her at our next workout.

Now that we are almost a month into karate classes, it should be easy to know what to work on at home!! Basic technique and kata are always a safe bet. Our first year students can all be practicing Power Kata (the all purpose kata!) each night. Everyone else can be working through the katas they already know and are working on. To go through Power kata, the 5 Pinan katas, and Kushanku only takes 10 or 15 minutes. But if you do them with conviction and energy they become a nice workout on their own.

Start thinking about our tournament which is held on November 26. There is a workout with the visiting Senseis on Friday, November 25 that is always really great!

See you next Tuesday!

Another Great Workout!!

Thanks, Sensei Jason, for leading an excellent workout last night! It was great to see so many people out and having fun.

In between classes, take some time to go over the basics that we have been drilling in class recently. Stand in “kiba-dachi” and throw some “tsukis” to the various points on the body. F0llow that by working through your blocks: age uke (rising block), udi uke (inside forearm block), soto uke (outside forearm block), and gedan barai (low block). Then, to shake things up a little, try moving across your kitchen floor in “zenkutso dachi” throwing a punch with each step. Add a little spice with a strong “kiai” to get your family’s attention. Practice can be fun!!

GREAT first day!!

What a great way to start the new 2011/12 Karate Season!

It was awesome to see so many new faces! And it was great to see the familiar faces of last year, too! Everyone worked really hard and “kicked” the season off with a bang!

Great job, everyone! See you next week!
